Important Safety Information
Walking the Overland Track in winter is a serious and challenging undertaking, suitable only for highly experienced bush walkers. In preparation for your walk, please see the Overland Track walk notes and winter walking information.
While winter can offer a spectacular alpine walking experience, it also presents significant dangers—especially for those with limited experience. Carefully consider whether to attempt the track during winter.
Only those well-prepared for extreme conditions—such as strong winds, heavy rain, snow, blizzards, and fallen trees obscuring the track—should undertake the walk.
Expect short daylight hours, minimal track and facility maintenance, and no guarantee of heating at hut sites.
There are huts at each of the main campsites along the Track: Waterfall Valley Hut (sleeps 34 people), Lake Windermere Hut (sleeps 34 people), Pelion Hut (sleeps 36 people), Kia Ora Hut (sleeps 34 people) and Bert Nichols Hut (at Windy Ridge campsite; sleeps 24 people), and numerous tent platforms at each of these locations. Spaces in these huts are not guaranteed and in the event a hut is full, or in the case of an emergency occurring between huts (injury, severe weather), you must carry a tent for shelter.
Rainwater tanks and composting toilets are provided at each of the main huts. Please note, water from rainwater tanks needs to be boiled or treated prior to drinking.
Mobile phones should not be relied upon for navigation or communication. Carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is strongly encouraged.
The weather in Tasmania's remote national parks can be notoriously unpredictable and at times, dangerous. Understand the weather forecast for the duration of your walk and observe sunrise and sunset times. (Cradle Valley and Lake St Clair are suggested for checking the forecast depending on current weather patterns).
Individuals are responsible for their own safety and assessment of their capabilities to undertake the Overland Track in winter. Please read our Safety in Parks information in preparation for this walk.
In winter you can start the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain walking south, or from Lake St Clair walking North. You can register to start your walk between the 1st of June and the 23rd of September. All walkers 18 and over will need to purchase a shuttle bus ticket if starting at Cradle Mountain.
